Story of Descartes-AK

Does it bother anyone else that Descartes never really mentions events of when he was growing up? I know he talks about the various different schools he went to but he never talks about his home life. Who raised him? What kind of views did they have? Obviously these views must have had some sort of affect on his life. He says things such as "I was assured..." (p. 13) But by who? Under what circumstances?

Yea thats true he never mentions any past experiances or any thing from his past that influenced what he thought or how he came up to be who he is.

I definitely think that your experiences influence who you are and who you will be in life. Personally the way I think is influenced by many major events that have happened in my life. I just think I could understand his way of thinking a little better if I knew more of his background but maybe that is just the way I learn.

That was a great point to bring up. Your parents, family life, friends, and environment have the most impact on you. Childhood memories or even stories your elders told you bring new light to your life which also influences your way of thinking. Maybe Descartes had a traumatizing experince in his life leading him to bring up all these questions, but we'll never know.

I checked on wikipedia because I was curious and I found out that his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only a year old. That definitely could influence the way you look at life. I could understand why he would challenge the fact that god exists. I know from personal experience that death and different life changing events cause you to challenge your religious views and your views in general.
